I learned in health class back in middle school that 80 percent of our taste comes from our sense of smell. The common cold, allergies, and flu often cause inflammation in our nasal passages which restricts the nerves in our nasal passage and effects our sense of smell. Losing our sense of taste and smell is nothing new, and it does not prove that there is a new virus today that has symptoms of loss of taste and smell that differs from what has always been around such as cold flu.
